Mobile Data Product Review - Novatel Wireless MiFi

As someone who lives off the beaten path, it turns out that some sort of wireless Internet was my only possible solution to higher than dial-up speeds for mobile data. After spending some time comparing services and contracts carefully, I decided against satellite in favor of cellular based wireless Internet. I ended up with Sprint, because they were the only ones at the time offering 3G speeds in my area with a plan that included unlimited bandwidth.

Recently, I had the occasion to purchase the new Novatel Wirelss MiFi at a greatly reduced price (provided I renew my contract, of course ), so I felt it a premium opportunity to share my experience with you. Sprint's retail on this nifty little do-dad is listed at 9, but I ended up paying after contract and mail-in rebate.

If you haven't seen the ads on television, the MiFi 2200 is a small cell-phone sized gadget that works as a mobile WiFi hotspot for up to 5 enabled devices. This happens to be perfect for my house, which has two desktop computers, one laptop and two PSPs, all using wireless networking.

I followed the directions and let it charge for two and a half hours, even though the charge light said it was completely charged as soon as I plugged it in. It really was a seemingly simple device, a slim silver rectangle with one button, obviously marked as the power button. The only other decoration was the prominent Sprint logo and a very small light on the side, which happens to be the hotspot indicator light.

According to the directions, all that was required was to power on the device, wait for the hotspot indicator light to turn solid green, and then connect using my computer's standard wireless networking setup. The MiFi turned on and showed ready in about five seconds, and readily showed up in my wireless network list with 100% signal strength. So far, so good. I connected to the hotspot, and all of a sudden, I was on the Internet.

That was about as easy as it could get, but I was curious, is that all there is to the device? What kind of security does it offer? I decided I should break out the manual.

With a little reading, I managed to log into the web interface for the MiFi, and was surprised to see a complete mini-router. Features include port forwarding, port filtering, Mac filtering and security that runs from 64 bit WEP to mixed- mode WPA/WPA2. You can even enable GPS on the MiFi, and any user connected can do local-based searches using the device's interface.

After some poking, prodding, speed testing and general hammering at it, I am happy to report that the MiFi 2200 is a nice little piece of equipment. It remains to be seen if it will have the longevity of my old Pantech PX500 pc-card. I don't know if it was designed to be a full-time access point. Only time will tell. I may give an update in the comments at a later date.

How to Find Wireless Phone Numbers

When you are looking for a wireless phone number, you may discover that is can be very time consuming. In fact, there are cases where it can be difficult as well. If you look up a wireless number online the odds are that you will eventually be led to a reverse search directory which is actually a service that is provided for a fee. These are investigative companies that offer their service for profit.

Sprint Cellular Phone

Let me explain just what a reverse phone directory is. It is basically just a simple search engine where you can locate information about a phone number such as the owners address, the provider of the service and details about the account.

Lookup Wireless Phone Numbers

The companies that do this type of investigation don't come cheap, they want top dollar for the service they offer. Sometimes you will see the cost even go as high as hundreds of dollars. The fact that there few companies offering this information and the demand is high allows then to get away with these prices. It also leads to an extended waiting period to receive your results in some cases.

Not very many people are aware of the fact that you can get the same results for less money and the method offers better results. The reason this method is not widely known about is because there is a law that protects your cell number to keep it private. There are a few legal directories, but they are available only to police departments and special investigative units.

The exception to this is directories which are created by using the services of private data brokers. These brokers charge a fee for their service so the cost is transferred to the legal officers and directories, thus creating the need for a fee to the end user. You can use a reverse directory to look up the name holder of the phone, this is a bit easier than using a wireless phone directory.

The best method for using a phone directory is to find one that lists all types of records. This type of directory will sometimes have cell numbers included as well as purchase information and the address of the purchaser. This would be the type of directory that allows all types of public records searches.

Lookup Wireless Phone Numbers By Name

You can't exactly lookup wireless phone numbers by name in any public phone book or online white pages. Since wireless phone numbers are protected by privacy, they are treated like any other unpublished phone number.

It is possible to lookup wireless phone numbers but you need to use a phone records background check site such as the ones used by private investigators.

Looking at Verizon Wireless Prepaid Cell Phones

You can get many different packages and deals with Verizon Wireless prepaid cell phones. Verizon is the largest telecommunications provider in the US and its network runs on CDMA technology, the same as Sprint Nextel. You can get some fantastic cheap deals with Verizon Wireless prepaid cell phones.

The concept of prepaid has been gaining popularity in recent times due to its many advantages. Firstly, there is no binding contract between you and the cellphone service provider. You also pay for your bills up-front, meaning you buy the amount of time you want to spend on the network ahead of using it, and then use it up as you prefer, depending on the specifications of the prepaid package.

Sprint Cellular Phone

Verizon offers straight-forward prepaid plans. Its coverage around the US is probably one of the best at the moment, seeing that it is the largest telecommunications company in the country.

Here are the four types of prepaid plans offered you (plans may vary according to your area):

Prepaid Basic This is the most basic prepaid package offered to you. You pay a flat rate for all calls to others on the same network, which is 25 cents a minute. To any other network or line you pay an additional 10 cents a minute. Text messages, sent and received, are 20 cents a message.

Prepaid Core You pay 99 cents a day for days that you use the service. With this, however, you get unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling (those who are on the same network). You pay 10 cents per minute on weekends (12am Saturday to 11:59pm Sunday) and nights (9:01pm to 5:59am). Every call you make to someone on a different network, you pay an additional 10 cents per minute. Text messages are also 10 cents a message

Prepaid Plus Here you pay .99 a day for days you use the service, and with that you get unlimited calling to those on the same network; unlimited Night and Weekend Minutes; you pay five cents for every call you make to a different network and text messages cost five cents as well.

Prepaid Unlimited Talk .99 a day gets you unlimited calls to those on the same network and any domestic lines, as well as unlimited Night and Weekend Minutes. Text messages only cost one cent a message.

Refills expire after a set amount of time, however. So you buy these refills and use them up as you decide, taking the above into account. You can buy refills of to .99, which expire in 30 days; -.99 which expire in 180 days; to .99 which expire in 90 days; and 0 which expire in one full year.

So as you can see with prepaid, you won't get any surprise bills at the end of the month and there are obviously no termination fees. If you're unhappy with the service you can just swap to another carrier, or if you can't afford to use the phone for the month you don't have to.

You only pay for the days you use the network, and there are NO credit checks if you want to go prepaid. Furthermore, you will be given access to many of Verizon's features to postpaid clients, such as VZ Navigator, its GPS service, and V Cast Music with Rhapsody, its music streaming service.

Verizon distributes phones from LG, Motorola and Samsung - some smart phones, some very basic phones - at some great prices at its website. So these are the sort of Verizon Wireless prepaid cell phones you should expect to get.
